Leadership Shelby County

Mission

Leadership Shelby CountyLeadership Shelby County (LSC) is designed to develop the leadership potential in our community.  By providing a collaboration of knowledge coupled with understanding, LSC equips leaders with necessary skills and abilities to enhance the economic growth and development of Shelby County. The program is designed for participants to take the leadership experience confidently into the many opportunities of service in the community.

Leadership Shelby County is an independent non-profit, and non-partisan organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life in Shelby County. The programs are developed to inform, inspire, and empower the current and future leaders of Shelby County. This linking network heightens awareness and actions for a better community in which to work and live.

LSC Goals

  • To provide a high quality leadership program for an annual class of diverse, representative participants.
  • To serve as a channel of continuing leadership development among its alumni and among a wide spectrum of the entire community leadership network.

Participation

Leadership Shelby County selects thirty participants for each annual class. During the application process they are asked to identify the county's strengths and weaknesses. By completion, the LSC participants have an understanding of the challenges before Shelby County. Graduates are inspired and encouraged to make a difference as challenges are met. The skills gained by being part of LSC benefit the participant both personally and professionally. Many companies realize the value of training through LSC and will sponsor tuition.  Leadership Shelby County encourages nominations of individuals who have demonstrated leadership ability in their chosen field, who have exhibited interest and commitment to the future of Shelby County, and who have the potential for exercising substantial leadership in the future. Because class size is limited and the selection process competitive, it is not unusual for a candidate to be nominated more than one year before being selected.

Sponsorship

Leadership, and the strength and importance of its development, is recognized by employers throughout the county. Fortunately, LSC has corporate sponsors that willingly invest in keeping the program cost to a minimum.  Many companies and individuals help make LSC a quality program. A special thanks to them and to the following who support LSC on a continual basis.

Programs

Leadership Shelby County begins each year in September with a mandatory overnight retreat. Participants learn the dynamics of team building and experience the esteemed bonding that each class develops.  Once a month from October through May, they attend a full day session on a specific high-priority topic. The topics chosen are designed to increase awareness of issues, provide a powerful knowledge base and promote the development of interactive problem-solving skills. During the graduation in May, each class presents a class project, and invites the community leaders, employers, and LSC alumni to join in the day's activities.
